Bollywood-Worthy Romance // My So-Called Bollywood Life by Nisha Sharma

My So-Called Bollywood Life by Nisha Sharma
Publisher: Crown BFYR (May 15, 2018)

Winnie Mehta was never really convinced that Raj was her soulmate, but their love was written in the stars. Literally, a pandit predicted Winnie would find the love of her life before her 18th birthday, and Raj meets all of the qualifications. Which is why Winnie is shocked to return from her summer at film camp to find her boyfriend of three years hooking up with Jenny Dickens. Worse, Raj is crowned chair of the student film festival, a spot Winnie was counting on for her film school applications. As a self-proclaimed Bollywood expert, Winnie knows this is not how her perfect ending is scripted.

Then there’s Dev, a fellow film geek, and one of the few people Winnie can count on to help her reclaim control of her story. Dev is smart charming, and challenges Winnie to look beyond her horoscope to find someone she’d pick for herself. But does falling for Dev mean giving up on her prophecy, and her chance to live happily ever after? To get her Bollywood-like life on track, Winnie will need a little bit of help from fate, family, and of course, a Bollywood movie star.

I’d like to thank Times Reads for providing an ARC of My So-Called Bollywood Life in exchange for an honest review.

One of the reasons why I knew I would enjoy Nisha Sharma’s debut novel, My So-Called Bollywood Life was the fact that it was along the vein of Sandhya Menon, one of my favourite contemporary YA writers. Throw in a healthy dose of Bollywood and Shah Rukh Khan references, I am in for the ride!

Though the only exposure I had to Bollywood films was from watching 3 Idiots, My Name is Khan and Dilwale, I had that gut feeling that I would thoroughly enjoy Winnie’s story of love and destiny. Going into My So-Called Bollywood Life, I expected lots of laugh-out-loud moments coupled with some swoonworthy ones and I was totally right.

If you’re looking for something that would make you swoon from all the romantic gestures, then get ready to be swept away by Nisha Sharma’s stellar debut novel. Even though I had never seen that many Bollywood films, I felt like it was a fun ride with Winnie because I liked how Nisha Sharma tied every instance in the novel with a Bollywood classic and that made Winnie’s story so exciting to read!

Undoubtedly, My So-Called Bollywood Life has buckets of charm and heart. I loved how Winnie was so passionate about Bollywood films and how her parents are supportive of her furthering her education in film studies. It’s definitely refreshing to see how Asian parents are supportive of their children’s passions, especially Winnie’s dad who planted Winnie’s love for Bollywood films in her.

“Winnie, when I first saw you, the giant lens that I’ve had on my future came into focus. It was like everything was blurry before, and then when you arrived, it was crystal clear.”

Winnie is a headstrong, passionate heroine who isn’t afraid to defy the odds stacked against her and I feel like her challenging kismet or whatever you want to call it, was well-written. Not only did she find love on her own—listening to her instincts and following her heart—she discovered more about herself and what it meant to own your thing.

As the book is focused on Winnie trying to escape the destiny that was given to her by the stars, especially when it’s related to her finding true love, it’s no surprise that the book is pretty romance-driven. Which is totally fine for me because I can read breathtaking romance scenes that would make my heart go a-flutter!

Which brings me to Winnie’s love interest and this insanely charming dude who should star in his own Bollywood movie because come on, he was a total cinnamon roll who respected Winnie and cherished her! Hold on, let me get a grip, I can feel my knees weakening at the thought of Dev! Guys, if you’re all about grand, romantic gestures, you should take a leaf out of Dev’s book and really, GO FOR IT. I think, deep in my heart, I know that Dev deserves a star just for being such a sweetheart.

Do you think My So-Called Bollywood Life is for you? If you’re looking for something incredibly cute with a sassy heroine and a wonderful exploration of kismet, then Nisha Sharma’s debut is for you! I laughed, I cheered and I definitely swooned.
